About the Book

Akin to the experiences of earlier fictional travelers Caufield and Moriarty, national award winning educator John Chapman takes you on a series of factual, humorous and insightful  road trips over the last 50 years in this autobiographical anthology of illustrated ballads and backstories.

A son of Scottish immigrants, the author a product of a middle class white bread first generation college experience, armed with a passion for social change and justice pursues meaning seeking adventures in ghetto schools and into the grinding poverty of reservation life during a turbulent time of war and protest.

You'll travel along side the author, up and down the interstate, looking for meaning and maturity while endeavoring to make a positive change in the world and trying to become, " a man for others."  Stops along the way include locations as varied as Detroit, Kalamazoo,Michigan, Scotland, Lost Island and Lame Deer, Montana. Various themes of the book include, education and careers, recession, war and violence, friendship and bromance, the pursuit of a cancer treatment, yoga, dance moves and spiritual growth. 

About the author

John Chapman

Author: John Chapman

John is a National award winning educator, he grew up in Detroit, Michigan and graduated from Western Michigan University (WMU) in Kalamazoo, Michigan three times '69, '74 and '81. The last time earning him a doctoral degree in counseling psychology. He taught in Detroit, was a VISTA in Montana, a vocational rehabilitation counselor in Kalamazoo, a counselor at the Van Buren Technology Center in Lawrence, Michigan for 30 years and was an adjunct faculty member at WMU from 1984 to 2010.

He retired in 2006. He is currently a part- time career counselor at Kalamazoo Valley Community College. He has written several programs that have garnered national awards for his places of employment. He received an "Innovator in Education Award," from McGraw-Hill in 2001. He wrote The Bully Blues, a 14 song rock opera in 2004.

Donald Ashcraft

From Edwardsburg, Mich., and is a current student at Kalamazoo Valley Community College (KVCC) majoring in Illustration. His future plans include becoming a storyboard artist and illustrator. Don works primarily in digital art with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator programs.

His work for this book includes: Hippy Hitchhiker, Tea Party Party, Oedipus Sex, Lottery #, Polish Falcon and Hypnoteyes.

Justin Bartl

Grew up in Carlton, Minn., he currently lives in Grand Junction, Mich., Justin is studying graphic design and web design at Kalamazoo Valley Community College. He plans to complete bachelor's degree and work for company in graphics and eventually start design business with Alicia Blackston. Herbert Bearchum Sr.

Resides in Lame Deer, Montana. He retired from the St. Labre Mission in Ashland, Mont., his 1971 Christmas card design is featured in this book

Alicia Blackston

Born in Grand Junction, Mich., and she attends Kalamazoo Valley Community College majoring in graphic design with a minor in illustration. She plans on completing a bachelor's degree in illustration.

Alicia enjoys conveying messages and emotions through visual communication. Since childhood, she has designed clothes, written songs and built things out of nothing. Her talents lie in surrealism, constructivist and dark art styles. She loves doing work that makes people think, tells them a story and leaves them with a question. She enjoys traditional and digital media and a mixture of the two.

Andy Chapman

Graduated from Kalamazoo College where he was awarded the Leila Chen Art Award senior year. He is a studio artist based in Salt Lake City, Utah where the close proximity to mountains and desert inspire his work. In addition to creative endeavors in the studio, Andy also works to inspire young artists in his role as art teacher at Timpanogos Academy.

He contributed backgrounds for Ghost Dance and Scotland the Grave.

Erin Dominianni

Proof reader and editor, and is a graduate of Kalamazoo College. Erin works as a freelance writer and editor for a variety of clients including Ford Motor Company, Junior League International, Marriott Hotels and NASCAR. Her work has appeared in magazines, brochures and press releases including Time magazine and USA Today.

She is co-author of Columbus Italians, a local history book by Arcadia Publishing that traces the immigration of Italians to Columbus, Ohio over the last century.

Doug Dykehouse

Grew up in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and he graduated from Central Michigan University. He received his graduate degree from Western Michigan University. Doug taught commercial art for 30 years, has won several awards for his art work and is a well-known local artist. His favorite media are oil paints and acrylics.

Doug's contributions in this book include: the cover I-94, Kraftbrau, and Obama Eyes.

John Leben

John's formal training came from the School of Art Institute of Chicago where he earned an MFA in painting, but he hasn't touched a real paintbrush since 1999. John paints digitally, meticulously crafting his compositions on his computer using powerful programs and a "digital" paintbrush. The finished paintings become printing plates from which he prints archival- quality limited edition prints on paper or canvas.

David Stokes

From Kalamazoo, Mich. and is an art student at Kalamazoo Valley Community College, he is interested in character design and illustration. He enjoys creating dynamic characters. His favorite mediums are colored pencil and watercolor.

Ronnie Merchant
